FREE Toronto-Vancouver-US-Canada change management team building Egg Drop team game

INDOOR or OUTDOOR

Challenge

Each team designs an egg package to save an egg from breaking when dropped.  Option:  also create a 30 second jingle to sell their package.

Development Areas:

  • Group Communications

  • Creativity

  • Problem Solving

  • Leadership

Time:

  • Approximately 30-45 minutes to build package

  • 15-30 minutes for Egg Drop

  • 15-30 for cleanup and debrief (more, based on number of participants and length of debrief desired)

Participants:

  • Groups of 20 to over 100 in teams of 5 are ideal, but can be done with even larger groups with additional facilitators

Materials:

  • 4 to 12 straws per team (lesser number creates increased difficulty)

  • Masking tape (lesser number creates increased difficulty)

  • Fresh eggs

  • Optional:  add other wacky materials that must be used in building package

  • Option:  provide no materials and require participants to find things in the natural environment

Preparation and Notes for Facilitator:

  • Divide the group into teams of 5

  • Tip: If held indoors, be sure to protect floors/walls from broken egg mess

Facilitate the activity:

  • Describe the challenge: to build a single egg package that can sustain a fall of eight feet

  • Conduct a grand "Olympic" style Egg Drop competition at the end of the session

  • Option for larger groups:  to simultaneously create a 30-second jingle for an infomercial that will be performed by the entire team at the final competition

Debrief questions:

  1. What was the initial reaction of your team?

  2. How well did the team cope with this challenge?

  3. What skills did it take to be successful as a team?

  4. What creative solutions were suggested and how were they received?

  5. What would an outside observer have seen as the strengths and weaknesses of the team?

  6. What did each team member learn about him/her self as an individual?

  7. What other situations in life or at work are like the Egg Drop?
